This 13th-century Franciscan friary, founded by the O'Briens, of Thomond who once ruled much of north Munster, has numerous 15th/16th-century sculptures carved in the local hard limestone. The Ennis Friary is located on Abbey Street near the river Fergus in Ennis and today the friary remains in a ruined state but is open to the public for tours and visits. There is now access to the Chancel that was cordoned off and also the magnificent 15th century carvings from the royal McMahon tomb are now back on site after conservation. As this site is managed by the OPW, school tour visits are permitted free of charge provided certain conditions are met. Booking is necessary and due to site restrictions one class only at a time of circa 25 pupils is possible.
